Driving away, day-dreaming about summertime, I felt the adventurous urge to try something new for lunch. Something that would make me feel like I was on a real vacation, without the hassle of travelling far or spending a ton of money. With the help of this Groupon deal, I ventured over to Jamaica House for some Caribbean food. (Hey if I couldn't go the Caribbean, I would make it come to me!)
Nothing makes you feel like you're grabbing your PTO by the balls more than sipping a large mug of cold Red Stripe, listening to the carefree sounds of Reggae music.
Making the most of my deal, I went ahead and ordered the Sweet Reggae Chicken with drunken plantains and sweet potato waffle fries.
I've had jerk chicken before when I took a cruise to Jamaica, and maybe I'm a wuss but I found it to be way too spicy. The Sweet Raggae Chicken had just the right amount of sweetness, with a kick in the pants of hotness that I could handle. Not so hot that it numbed my taste buds, but just enough to clear my sinuses and give a slight case of the sniffles. Sides of brown rice and steamed garlic cabbage helped put out the fire too.
The sweet potato fries were delicious and addicting. Sprinkled with cinnamon and brown sugar, I wish I had more room in my stomach, but also happy I got most of them to-go so I have something to munch over the weekend - or every time I pass the refrigerator.
Plantains are quickly becoming my new favorite thing. I recommend getting these amazing drunken plantains as a dessert instead of a side though. Drenched in a sweet, brown rum sauce, it feels like you're sinking your teeth into tender paradise. I would love to top these on a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
All of this was way under the $30 deal, so the cashier just had me pay the $1.25 tax. Sounded fair in my book, plus I got a free beer out of it which the Groupon said it wouldn't cover. I left satisfied and feeling irie (yes, i said it - when else am I going to be able to use that word in a post?) with ample leftovers, ready as ever to kick back and enjoy the Friday afternoon sunshine.
Lastly, your relevant Friday funny - Bacon or Beer Can.
