DIY - Cozy Pumpkin Pie Incense

Finally it's starting to feel like fall, and I can't think of a more perfect time than the first few days of October. This time of year always reminds of that quote from You've Got Mail, when Joe Fox says, "Don't you love New York in the fall? It makes me wanna buy school supplies. I would send you a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils if I knew your name and address." Houston's summer heat and humidity is slowly fading away, flawlessly simultaneous with the leaves' changing colors.

One of my very favorite things about fall is stepping into a warm house filled with the comforting smell of spices.  That rich fragrance of freshly baked cinnamon apples, hot pumpkin pie, and gingerbread cookies. It makes me want to curl up in my most comfy pajamas and colorful socks, with a big glass of red wine under a gigantic, cushy blanket.

To bring that cozy ambiance to your home, you can always buy candles, bake all day, or you can have some fun making your own pumpkin pie incense burner.

You'll need:
a small pumpkin (Go for one with a crazy, spooky stem if you like! Only $2.98 at HEB)
a spoon for scooping out pumpkin guts
one votive candle
an assortment of sharp knives for carving

Using a sturdy knife, chop off the top ¼ of your pumpkin.
Clean out the innards using your hands (I love that squishy feeling) and/or a spoon.

Rub the top of the pumpkin with fall-flavored spices: nutmeg, cinnamon, pumpkin spice and cloves.

{I attempted carving whimsical swirls into my top, but they looked more like sperm,
thus a smiley face}

Cut a hole in the bottom of the pumpkin, and nestle your votive candle inside. Light, put the top back on, and wait for the lovely smell of freshly baked pumpkin pie to slowly meander through your home.

{Now your place smells like you've been slaving away in front of a hot oven all day and is filled with the spirit of Halloween!}

Reuse your pumpkin a few more times, reapplying a fresh layer spices to keep the love for fall alive.
